Working it In Teneessee

Stop 3 – Old Hickory Lake, Tennessee - June 19 – 21

Old Hickory…another river, hopefully I will fair better on this one than I did in Alabama. My husband and I had a great practice. It was beautiful down there. Early morning top water bites were on as well as a shallow wood pattern.

Day 1 – Started Day 1 in Spencer Creek throwing top waters…nothing going on with that this morning. Fished a jig and spot remover a while, but no keepers out of there. Moved on to the wood out on the ledges of the river, and managed 3 keepers. From there I went to some rock where I caught a 4 pounder during practice. I picked up 2 more keepers and lost one that would go about 4lbs. right at the net. Ended up in 18th with 7lbs. 5oz. My day one co-angler was Michelle Gunderman from North Carlonia…we had a great time.

Day 2 – Let me tell you about this day…being #10 out that day, it started good then went to worse. I have a gator mount automatic trolling motor bracket that decided that morning not to go all the way down…I went through the check in line and had to get over to the side to try to get my trolling motor down. Finally, it goes, my day 2 co-angler was Renee Gumbretch from New Jersey and she was great…she tried her best to talk me out of letting this bother me…13 boats had passed us and she looked at me and said “you only have to pass 13 of them”. What a great attitude she had and I knew the day would get better. We reached my 1st spot but was unable to go over there, there was already 2 boats on it. So I went to my next spot…just down a bit. I caught a keeper early on a senko but the top water bite was not on that day. So I was going to go to the next spot and again my trolling motor would not go up…and it would not go down. I made a call to Deb so I could get my backup trolling motor and hopefully this would releave my problem once and for all. So while waiting on my spare trolling motor, we were drifting and Renee hooked into a keeper…she was too funny, she just smiled at me and said “See, everything happens for a reason”. We lost about an hour of fishing because of trading out the trolling motors, but she has a great attitude so that also helped mine. I caught 3 more keepers that day and ended up with 7lbs. 11oz. with 4 fish on the day. I ended the day in 15th and qualified for day 3 which is what it is all about.

Day 3 – Today they are calling for rain…that would be different. Today my partner is Lesley Childers from South Carolina…here we go. Again the spot I wanted to hit first already had boats on it. Old Hickory has several tournaments that go on all during the week and at night and on the weekends…there are a lot of people out there fishing. Went to #2 spot…caught a nice 3 pounder right off the bat. I then went to my rip rap…there I had caught several nice fish during practice and several during the tournament. This turned out to be the best day of all. The bite was slow but we were presitent…this would prove to be my best day on the water. The fish were bigger here that day than the previous days. We survived a pretty good rain shower then the sun came out and so did the boat traffic. But Leslie and I did not let that bother us. I lost a good keeper that would have helped me but I ended up with a limit and big stringer of the day with 11 lbs. 5 oz. That put me in 5th place for the tournament. Leslie ended up in 13th place with 2 fish…we had a great day and I made a new friend…thanks Leslie for being so great and for making it a fun day on the water.

A special thanks to my co-anglers, Michelle, Renee and Lesley…it is great to make new friends. And of course thanks to my husband…RD you are the best.

It is going to be a long break between tournaments. Our next stop is Clarks Hill Lake in Georgia…but not until September…what will I do for more than 2 months… : )
